In line with Governor Soludo’s Urban Renewal Agenda and the need to help the present administration in building a liveable and prosperous homeland, officials of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) have embarked on a massive campaign to sensitize shops and business owners on the expectations of the agency to ensure that Awka Capital becomes a smart mega city.
Speaking during a briefing before the commencement of the exercise, the ACTDA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Ossy Onuko through his Head of Development Control, Charles Ekwunife, underscored the need to enhance the beauty of the Awka Capital City environment, hence directs all shops and business owners in Awka to immediately effect the use of Aluco board as signpost which should be placed to cover the roof or the top of their business premises.
He said the aim of the state government was to have an organized uniformed city outlook as every shop is expected to give a distance of four feet from the drainage channels across the state. Mr. Ekwunife further explained that however people are permitted to have a canopy in front of their shops but that such must not be extended more than four feet from the building. Recently, the agency enforced the ban on street trading in major streets of Awka.
During the sensitization, Ekwunife said plans are on by the Anambra State Government to develop cluster sales points within Awka capital to accommodate displaced street traders. He said government has designated various temporary locations for the traders who had been causing obstruction in major roads across the capital city to continue their businesses pending the completion of the sales points. According to him, when the traders move into the designated places, it will be much cheaper and safer for them rather than displaying their goods and wares along the streets of Awka. He noted that in line with the governor Soludo idea of creating a livable and prosperous Homeland, the Awka Capital Territory.
